Mark Aldred comments on the police forces and their attitude on reducing the risk to the public in relation to Police Pursuits.
Mark Aldred, who advises the Police Federation, the body which represents rank and file officers, mentions that a “no pursuit” policy had effectively been quietly introduced to reduce fatal collisions.
He argued that national guidance on police pursuits drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) was so restrictive that chases would be aborted if the suspects was a juvenile, known to officers or riding a motorcycle.
Mr Aldred said: “What you have effectively got is by stealth a ‘no pursuit’ policy. When forces talk about reducing the risk, they are not. They are reducing the risk to the organisation of being sued, but they are not reducing the risk to the public.
