Philip Stott is prosecuting Leoaai Elghareeb, a qualified solicitor, at Isleworth Crown Court.
Mr Elghareeb is on trial in respect of an indictment containing three counts of contaminating goods, contrary to section 38 of the Public Order Act 1984 and two counts of assault by beating, contrary to section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988. Mr Elghareeb is accused of entering branches of Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco on Fulham Palace Road on 25 August 2021 and injecting produce with syringes filled with his own blood, in addition to throwing a syringe at a passer-by and pushing a security guard. The stores suffered hundreds of thousands of pounds of loss due to destroyed stock and lost sales. The defence is that he is not guilty by reason of insanity, due to his severe psychosis at the time.
