Nick Corsellis QC appeared on behalf of the Professional Tennis Integrity Officers and Tennis Integrity Unit in the case of the Egyptian tennis player Youssef Hossam.
Hossam reached a career-high singles ranking of 291 in December 2017 but was found to have committed 21 breaches of anti-corruption rules between 2015 and 2019. He has been banned from the sport for life. His elder brother, Karim Hossam, was banned from tennis for life for multiple match-fixing offences in 2018.
The case was a highly complex conspiracy involving international match fixers who liaised with the Hossam brothers who then went on to lose sets of, or whole matches, at an agreed score. The matches were at the lower levels of the sport where scrutiny of betting is more difficult and involved complex and sophisticated planning.
The Independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer Jane Mulcahy QC observed that “corruption in sport was fraud, capable of destroying the sport.”
Nick was instructed by Jamie Singer and Ross Brown of Onside Law.
