Ben FitzGerald represented John Varley, former Chief Executive of Barclays, in the SFO’s prosecution of four individuals for fraud concerning the Bank’s 2008 capital raising from Qatar, successfully securing his acquittal.
Ben was instructed by Barclays and joined the team acting for the Bank’s former Chief Executive at his trial in 2019 for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. He was led by Nicholas Purnell QC.
In June 2019, the Court of Appeal upheld the trial judge’s finding that there was no case for Mr Varley to answer.
