Jonathan Waghorne-Brown

Called to the Bar:2024

  • Jonathan joined chambers in September 2024 and was called to the bar by Gray’s Inn in July 2024, his pupil supervisor is Tom Broomfield.

    Experience 

    Before retraining as a barrister, Jonathan spent seven years working in policy and politics. This period included five years in HM Treasury, during which time he was an Assistant Private Secretary to Chancellor Philip Hammond, as well as Head of Universal Credit, leading the Treasury’s welfare response to COVID-19. Jonathan also worked for the consultancy firm Portland Communications, advising some of the UK’s biggest corporations on domestic policy and communications strategies. In his last job before retraining, Jonathan was Chief of Staff at the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence. 

    Jonathan has degrees from the University of York and the University of Oxford, and completed his academic legal training at City, University of London. While on the Bar Course, Jonathan was awarded the Stephen Seabrooke Memorial Prize for the top performance in the criminal exams, the British Academy of Forensic Sciences Prize for the top performance in the Crown Court Practice module, and the Everard Ver Heyden Foundation Prize for coming fifth overall in his year. 

    Outside of work Jonathan is a school governor in Tower Hamlets. In his free time, he is likely to be walking his dog, Mabel, in one of South London’s many parks.
